I’ve got the power to be:
You might be wondering what I am about to share with you in this chapter, because obviously we read like we were taught to read in school. Sure thing! That’s the way to do it.
But what’s the way to BE the person who would be able to DO it in a way that gets you the most out of this book? Have you thought of it in that way? There’s not just one, but many resourceful ways of being that I can suggest to you. It’s like wearing a particular hat that transports you to a certain desirable frame of mind, just right for that moment!
So I thought of spoiling you with choices! I’ve got at least 10 imaginary hats to offer here! You can mix and match and wear them in any order you like! As long as you wear one, you’ll love the result you’ll attract in your life. And gradually you’ll come to realise that you might not need to depend on any imaginary hat at all, for you would have retained the magical powers those hats had to offer, deep inside your heart and right between your ears. I am eager to hear your experience that follows!
Come winter or monsoon and we make sure to equip ourselves with jackets and raincoats before we step out of our homes. But what do we do when we visit a friend’s place or get back home? We leave the coats on the coat rack! Because we know we’re warm enough indoors and it’s safe for our body to get rid of the jackets now.
I’d invite you to try on the same analogy while reading this book! This book is not out to harm you and only intends to create a safe and warm learning environment for you. And even though some ideas may seem unfamiliar to you in the beginning, as you immerse yourself deeper, you’ll find yourself making best friends with some of them!
All you have to do is leave your existing learnings on the shelf, while creating fresh space for some new ones you’re about to absorb from this book. No, I’m not literally asking you to forget all your intelligence! It’s just a pretend game we’re playing (bring out your inner child if needed!) so you can be accommodative of the ideas presented in this book, while finding the right filing space for them in your library of intelligence acquired so far! Cool? Cool!
Presented here is a short poem on the subject of LIFE, which I wrote when I was about 12 years old. It was my first poem ever and looking back at it now, I realize 12 years of a living experience was good enough for a human being to understand the philosophies of life and express them in a decently rhythmic and poetic manner. What made me write it? Just the joy of getting a free period in class and the opportunity to connect deeply with myself, due to the absence of one of my teachers! And I remember, despite the chatterbox that I used to be in school, indulging in every moment I could ever get to talk with my friends, it was one of those special days when I was feeling so deeply connected with myself that all the fun in a teacher less class seemed less significant at that time!
And now, writing this book is a huge leap of faith on the way to self-trust. It took me nearly 20 years to get here and in retrospect, I can see this was definitely possible much earlier. Better late than never; I trust myself now and made this book happen. What are you waiting for?
"It’s always best to start at the beginning. And all you do is follow the Yellow Brick Road. "
-Glinda, the Good Witch (Wizard of Oz)
When I heard Glinda suggest this to Dorothy, I suddenly had my antennae up! I was asking myself, ‘Wasn’t it obvious to start at the beginning? Then why did she even have to say it?’ I rewound the DVD and had a second go at it. And then I thought to myself, the seriousness with which she said it is probably because despite this being life’s most basic and simple principle to follow, it is still largely and conveniently ignored in the many complex endeavours of the modern world to complicate life!
What I also perceived Glinda to be saying is that the path is all laid out. The models are ready, and all we have to do is replicate them in our own lives. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Just ride in a Ferrari! Isn’t that easy? It sure is.
And that’s what has also prompted me to write my book. It was one of my dreams and all I had to do was connect with people who had done it earlier, adopt their system, follow it and the result is this book in your hands!
I call this chapter ‘Let’s Get Started’ just in case you’ve not taken any action yet. The book has actually begun a couple of chapters back!
Are you still waiting for the main content to arrive? Or are you completely digging into the message? Honestly, there’s so much that has been shared already and enough strategies to keep you going with a new attitude to explore daily for at least a fortnight. The power is now in your hands. The power is in the implementation, not in the information!
However, if you’re the one that wants more, I definitely have a whole buffet to serve to you. There’s a whole variety of flavours and textures, each one stimulating your senses in a different way and helping you connect deeply with your own self, like never before. BUT
Before you move on to the next page, once again I want to ask you to pause for a moment and make that solemn vow to yourself to take at least one piece of action after you read anything new.
Here’s my vow to myself and to you:‘Right now, I am open to infinite possibilities. I have zero limitations in my life. If one person can achieve something, then I believe every other person can achieve it too. Success comes over time and with enough practice, doing the same thing over and over again. It is only a matter of making a choice to acquire that skill and do that thing.’
LET’S GET PERSONAL (1)
Here are some questions I am asking myself right now for the stretches in life that I am experiencing. Are you too?
‘A change in behaviour begins with a change in the heart.’
Welcome to this chapter where we’re going to shed off some old scaly skin and grow some fresh new wings! After all, if nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies.
And the world would be such a less beautiful place. Wouldn’t it?
I want to share with you one of my stories about how I experienced and embraced change. It was my coaching intake weekend at The Coaching Institute, Melbourne and our super-awesome teacher and mentor was sharing with us methodologies to leverage our time. He told the group that anyone and every one of us could write our own book and provide that as a helpful resource to our clients rather than teaching and explaining to each and every one of them the thinking models individually.
At that moment, I felt really challenged and confronted and some emotions surfaced. It was a difficult thing to believe; however, I was secretly hoping that what he said was true about anyone being able to write their own book. The intake weekend over, I slowly and steadily started immersing myself in building my business. I got engrossed in coaching clients and my business was picking up well, when I suddenly started experiencing that exhaustion of having to repeat more or less the same philosophies and thinking models for different clients which was taking up a lot of my one-on-one time. After all, the human brain works in standard universal patterns!
I thought it was now time I wrote out that book which Joe Pane was referring to, nearly a year ago. I set myself a goal to write a book before 2015 ends and started developing some writing muscle. So I hopped onto a free writing challenge that I came across on the internet, where you practise writing 500 words daily, consistently for a period of 30 days.
And that was a good strategy to build empowering reference points for myself, because by the time I completed the challenge, I had nearly written 15000 words in a month. And that’s almost the minimum content of a book. It was only May 2015 and I thought I had lots of time on hand. (Notice that I was looking for change and I chose a writing challenge that was free!)
May 2015 went by; I wrote 30 short articles and that was the end of it. How do I bring out my book? How do I map out the contents? What will be my title and who would read my book? How can I get it printed? And even if I managed it up to that stage, how would I launch it, market it and sell it? Too many questions and hardly any answers. Overwhelm playing at its best! A couple of book-writing retreats came my way, but the fact of signing up with them was causing me enormous perceived discomfort: physically, financially and emotionally.
And then when I saw Dave launching one of his author’s books in August, I asked myself, where is it that the real discomfort lies right now? Is it where I am now, sitting on the fence with splinters, or is it really on the other side at Dave’s retreat, writing out my first book, under the guidance of an established and proven system where I don’t have to reinvent the wheel?
It was the 2nd of August, 2015, by which time I was also about to enter the second trimester of my first pregnancy. I had already promised myself early on in the pregnancy that my story will not be one of pain, lethargy and limitations. It would instead be one full of love, care and possibilities. It would be a story about always finding a way when I wanted a solution. It was not only going to be a great positive reference point for my future pregnancies, but it would also be a great inspiration to all the women out there.
I had by now already visualised myself sharing my story with all the women who are conditioned by the beliefs that the world imposes on them, about a pregnancy being the gateway to a dead end a dead end to your physical stamina, career or business aspirations, material desires, your body shape and most importantly self-love. So many women think it’s wrong or they feel guilty about loving and pampering themselves, because they have been made to believe that now everything should be about the baby. But love is not manufactured on machines. It is generated in your heart. And for anyone else to experience your love, you have to generate it and experience inside you, before you can let the excess flow outside!
Anyway, so now, one more thing struck me
‘Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re always right!’
- Henry Ford
I’m glad to find you on this page because I choose to make it mean that you’re really curious and committed. And these two characteristics put together are the beginning of massive growth in life.
But for you to bring lasting positive change in your life, it’s extremely important that you identify and explore your belief systems and also understand how they work. After all, all change begins with awareness!
You need to identify your belief systems, all the more so if you’ve constantly been trying to make changes in your life but instead find yourself ending up with the same type of trends and results in terms of the people who you attract and hang around with, your friends, your intimate relationships, jobs or career opportunities, your business or even your health. It’s your belief systems that really ‘run the show’ of your life.
So you might be wondering, how exactly are these belief systems formed and how do they really control my life?
Well, belief systems start forming right from the moment we are born and the process goes on predominantly up until the time we’re about seven or eight years old. No, the process doesn’t stop, but by that age, we have mostly formed our basic premise of making most decisions, or we could say our Primary Beliefs are formed. And then the results of our decisions start forming our Secondary Beliefs, as if it was a fixed mathematical formula which will be true every other time in life.
From the moment that we are born, we start absorbing information at the rate of two million bits per second as has been researched by scientists and psychologists.
We absorb information through our senses of seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting. And then our conscious mind almost tells us, Look, you can intake information at any rate you like, but right now, I can’t concentrate on so many things at the same time. So let’s negotiate and stick to focusing only on 7 +/- 2 bits at any given time and I’ll store the excess information in the storage drive or unconscious mind. Deal? Deal! (We really have no control here! After all, Mind Rules!)
So to present to you a crisp output summary of all the inputs you just gave the mind, it has to compress those two million bits into 7 +/- 2 bits, for which the mind uses three pressing machines called Deletion, Distortion and Generalisation. (For future reference, let’s refer to them as DDGs.)
Deletion occurs when we leave out a portion of our experience.
Distortion occurs when something is mistaken for that which it is not. (For example, a man sees a piece of rope on the road and thinks it is a dangerous snake, so he warns the entire village, but actually there is no snake at all.)
Generalisation occurs when one specific experience represents a whole class of experiences.
There’s a whole lot more that goes on in the background, but for a broader understanding, this is how we form our beliefs. And as you can see, if this is how we form our beliefs, most of the time they are really far away from the reality. Anything we believe is only our version of the reality.
So, based on this strategy that our mind uses to form beliefs, we start creating our own versions of filtered perceptions and call them our beliefs. Beliefs are things that we are sure are right. These almost become like our operating system or basic programming, which runs all the other programs of our body and takes charge of all our decisions.Beliefs can be limiting or empowering.
Here is an example of a limiting belief that one of my clients had formed when she was nine. She had tried to answer a teacher’s question in class and though the answer was right, she had a little slip of the tongue as she spoke and as a result, all the students in the class burst out laughing. She used her senses to feed or supply this information from her external environment to her mind which in turn applied the DDG filters to compress the information so she could focus on 7 +/- 2 chunks of output. And unfortunately, her mind’s output turned out to tell her that she should never open her mouth to speak in a public forum.
